Former La Salle Star Gets 10 Years for Selling Crack Former La Salle basketball star Kareem Townes was sentenced to 10 years in prison with no chance for parole Monday after pleading guilty to selling crack cocaine to an undercover drug agent. The 29-year-old Townes declined to try to salvage his basketball career by testifying for the prosecution, his lawyer A. Charles Peruto Jr. said. "He refused to cooperate. He said that he did the crime and he would do the time," Peruto told the Philadelphia Inquirer for a story on its Web site. Townes, who played three seasons at La Salle and is sixth on the school's career scoring list with 1,925 points, pleaded guilty in December to conspiracy and possession with intent to sell crack near a public elementary school. The 10-year sentence was the mandatory minimum set by law.
